Before grizzly bears were exterminated in California, this magnificent animal thrived in the great valleys and low mountains of the state (probably in greater numbers than anywhere else in North America). Food: The bears were omnivorous with a diet that included grasses, seeds, berries, roots, nuts, acorns, small and large mammals including elk and deer, fish and carrion including beached whale carcasses. It was believed to be the biggest bear ever killed till John Lang shot an individual weighing 2320 pounds in 1873, near his ranch in Canyon Country. There are multiple kinds (subspecies) of grizzly bears. Many obliged. Col. Maxcy kept the skull of the bear as a souvenir until around 1900 when it was reportedly sold to a museum in the south, believed to be either Georgia or Tennessee. Grizzly bear numbers peaked in the mid-nineteenth century, and public fascination with the animals grew. The tree still stands off Guejito Road as does the Lovett home.
A gruesome bear attack (surprise, surprise) that Adams suffered in 1855 bothered him more and more, however, and forced him to end the show. The first known recorded description of the California grizzly bear comes to us from Antonio de la Ascensión, a Spanish priest who mapped the California coast as part of the Vizcaino Expedition. So popular was Theodore Roosevelt’s decision that a toy stuffed bear was created to celebrate the event. The Bear Flag first flew in 46 as a symbol of the New Republic of California, but was replaced by a second version adopted by the State Legislature in 1911. Now, scholars must rely on diaries, newspaper articles, letters, and reports to trace the story of this creature and tease out fact from fiction, myth from reality. It is true that the California grizzly bear is long gone, but you can help preserve the animal’s history the next time you visit California Adventure and take a harrowing white-water rafting adventure through the Sierra Nevadas.
