The growing cavity sits in West Antarctica at the bottom of Thwaites Glacier, which is about as big as Florida and contains enough ice to contribute more than 2 feet to sea level rise, NASA said.

Scientists think this cavity is a major cause of the ice loss seen at the glacier. It's thought that a sea level rise of two feet would swamp coastal towns and cities, turfing millions across the globe from their homes.

Be in the know. A particular area of concern, visited by the robotic submarine, named Icefin, is a boundary called the grounding line between where the glacier rests on the ocean bed, and where it floats over water. View our online Press Pack.

"The connected channels that we've mapped are the potential pathways for deep-ocean warm water to get in and do damage," BAS's Dr Tom Jordan said. It is growing at an "explosive" rate that surprised researchers conducting a study the agency led on the glacier. "The findings highlight the need for detailed observations of Antarctic glaciers' undersides in calculating how fast global sea levels will rise in response to climate change," NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said. Experts estimate that its complete collapse would aggravate the phenomenon adding 65 centimeters to the oceanic water.
It seems to not only be melting on the ocean edges, but also from underneath, and warmer ocean waters are infiltrating.

NASA said the hole is large enough to have held 14 billion tons of ice -- the majority of which has melted during the last three years. Thwaites, which flows into Antarctica's Pine Island Bay, is already losing eight times as much ice a year as it was in the late 1990s.

And, experts think melting Antarctic ice could cause areas of the ocean to turn a "deep green" colour by 2100.

Scientists think we could see a total collapse of the glacier within the next century, and are scrambling to better understand how to save it.
