Usually on the low route, there are dirt roads close by.

This trail starts from Jumla Bazar and heads to the Mugu district. Although not yet complete, the Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) is almost mythical among trekkers and it’s easy to see why. Your request cannot be processed. 2014: John Fiddler, Kathleen Egan, and Seth Wolpin traversed the proposed high route of the GHT and became the first team to cross all five technical passes without porter support. I initially assumed the low route would be the easier of the two, but I could not have been more wrong. The GHT (so-called upper and lower) currently can be roughly mapped out through existing routes, but these routes may not provide a continuous and uninterrupted trail. Our Story; Testimonials; Our Team; Partners; Contact Us; Interactive Map for Great Himalayan Trail. The trail takes 6 months and, if you were to use an operator, would cost in the region of US$30,000. The cultural experience is certainly mind-blowing and the remote wilderness has an alluring beauty that is hard to find in the populated world. I imagine the low route could be hiked any time of year, although I would not recommend doing it in summer. Please try again.

We are carrying very light packs (~12lb base weight), so we can move fast and cover a lot of distance during days while staying/re-supplying in villages. The route offers diversity in terms of landscapes, flora and fauna, people and culture: from snow leopards to red pandas; from sub-tropical jungle to fragile high-altitude eco-systems; from the famous Sherpas, to Shamanism, to the ancient Bön Buddhist culture in Dolpa. This is a factor in determining prices. You mention that is 270$ for the permits, but it’s actually closer to 2.000$ if you go through Upper Mustang and Upper Dolpo. The Great Himalaya Trail has two recommended routes, the high route and the low route. There are a few sections of the high route where guides are mandatory. We got to avoid some of the springtime snow and the summertime heat.

Maps. Hi Rana, here is a good route and planning guide: https://amzn.to/2O6WlxX.

This page is maintained by HAL co-founder Seth Wolpin, who thru-hiked the Nepal section in 2014 with friends John Fiddler and Kathleen Egan, crossing all technical passes self-supported. Not exactly. The high route also takes you through some awesome sections of trail, like Makalu Base Camp, the Everest region, the Annapurna Circuit, and Dolpa. The two maps below show the Lower Great Himalaya Trail connecting from Rara, Jumla and […]

We recommend carrying maps from the Himalayan Map House. There are two routes encompassing the Great Himalaya Trail: the high route and the low route. Many of the way points were collected by Robin Boustead from his explorations and he also collected many from different people (Shawn Forrey, Bob Rosenbaum, Jamie McGuinness, Richard Bull, and others). Completing the Upper Great Himalaya Trail (1,700 km in literature, in reality roughly 1,600 km) + 400 kilometres extra in the Far West (up and down triple border point, then by district Bajhang to Humla, from where we followed the Upper GHT/High Route).

Our tracks, and waypoints themselves are often suffixed ‘RFB’ for ‘Run for the Border’ which was our team name. For most of these regions you can buy the permit at the park entrance.

GPS tracks are often from 10 minute increments created by a satellite transponder used by Seth Wolpin during a 2014 crossing. The region is named after Mt Makalu, which at 8,463 metres (27,766 ft) is the world's fifth highest mountain.

Sometimes it will be much less. There are hundreds of paths throughout the Himalaya.

Note that some tracks (especially alternative shortcuts) may be hidden by default. The trail is broken up into sections that can be trekked individually or all as one, depending on your time frame. Required fields are marked, i need full map in one page where buy? It’s no secret that I love Nepal.

Afterwards, we continued along the low route through the Solokhumbu region until reaching the village of Jiri (south of Sagarmatha National Park). Hello Megan! Robin is the architect of the trail and the authority. Whilst Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit trek see thousands of tourists a year, there are literally hundreds of other trekking routes throughout Nepal that get little attention. These sections of trail are far from Kathmandu, and you still have to pay for the guide’s transportation and a few days of services to get through the check posts.

It doesn’t promote sustainable and responsible tourism. Unlike the High Route, you’ll be able to stay in tea houses and guest lodges for much of the trek and get hot meals almost daily. We found it helpful to ask them for two estimates – a fast walk and a slow walk.
