This is a brief description starting counter-clockwise from the main trailhead at Slate Run. Great views! Leisurely hike downhill to the finish line Wiedener Eck. Head less than a mile further for creekside campsites, if not backtrack to some available before the bridge. The first stage of the Westweg leads you from Pforzheim on the northern edge of the Black Forest steadily up to the climatic health resort Dobel. You hike here on comfortable forest trails to Seibelseckle, where you can take a break at the small rest house. 44 and Dam Hollow Rd. From here, the western trail, marked with a red rhombus, leads you past a wooded, gentle ridge to the ruins of Hoheneck. On the eighth stage, the Westweg winds its way up and down the mountains of the southern Black Forest. We have planned all our hikes in such a way that you can easily find a hotel or guesthouse at the individual stage destinations.

On the fifth stage, you will hike from the Naturhotel Zuflucht to the Vesperhof Hark, which lies amidst alpine meadows. Although I did not encounter any rattlesnakes, there was fresh bear droppings. From up here you have a fantastic view of the highest peaks of the Black Forest: To the south, Feldberg, Belchen, Hochfirst and Kandel line up.Starting point of the eighth stage is the Gasthof Wilhelmshöhe. The next seven kilometers are without significant height differences and so you can protect your knees a bit.From the small refuge Egertenhütte begins the last, short climb of the day. The many streams the trail crosses (including Slate Run) afford excellent angling opportunities, including a chance to catch (and release) native brook trout. Here used to be an important fortification, after which the pass is still named today. Leader walked right past it so keep your eyes peeled for snakes who find themselves in these conditions. The Black Forest Trail is a 42-mile (68 km) loop trail in Pennsylvania's Tiadaghton State Forest in parts of Lycoming, Potter, and Clinton Counties. With all of the trail options in Pennsylvania's Michaux State Forest, it's hard to pick just one. At the top around mile 29 (km 47) there is a wonderful, dry, mountaintop campsite with views of Pine Creek.

You follow the course of the Kander to the south. There is water when water is needed so the dried up creeks weren’t a bother, camp foster has a small pond to reload at. Then it goes downhill and under the A98 motorway. We (6 of us) did the BFT North Loop MDW, planning on starting Saturday, staying two nights, and finishing Monday early afternoon. but I’d say the trail was closer to 26-27 miles.

Drive west, then north, on Slate Run Road for .8 mile to a pine plantation. Starting point of the eighth stage is the Gasthof Wilhelmshöhe. Next stop is the Friedrichsturm on the Badener Höhe. If you feel fit enough, nothing stands in the way of your hike on the Westweg. I was completely wasted at the end.

From here, the western trail, marked with a red rhombus, leads you past a wooded, gentle ridge to the ruins of Hoheneck.After crossing the Nagold, the trail winds for a while through the city and then into the Pforzheim Arboretum. The Black Forest Trail gets its name from the dense hemlocks that once grew here, keeping the forest floor in an everlasting darkness. Bugs as expected for this time of year. The castle stands on a mountain spur on the edge of Neuenbürg, which is surrounded on three sides by the Enz.From the castle, the path gently descends and over the Enz. There is also an old mountain hotel, which has been abandoned for several years. Continue past alpine meadows and past grand, venerable Black Forest farms.
