Along our paddle we decided to venture into another very small side creek at mile 1.6 mi RR.
The Ralph E. Simmons Memorial State Forest encompasses more than 3,600 acres along the south bank of the river, northeast of the community of Boulogne. If you aren�t familiar with the multitude of strokes needed to maneuver your kayak around obstructions you�d be better off launching at the Highway 94 Bridge (mile marker 20) in St. George, GA. St. Mary�s Cove � Macclenny, FL Traders Hill � Folkston, GA (53 miles). Joined by another stream, Moccasin Creek, the river emerges from the Okefenokee Swamp at Baxter, Florida/Moniac, Georgia. � The group split up by about 400-500 yards. Regardless the fish weren�t fried up as mentioned earlier. Obediah’s Okefenok is a recreation of the 1800s homestead of Obedia Barber, a man known as the “King of the Okefenokee.” The authentic homestead includes approximately 30 exhibits such as a cabin, sugarcane mill, potato house, and livestock barn. According to the US Forest Service’s Forest Statistics for Georgia, 1997 report, there is approximately 919,800 acres of commercial forest land in the entire counties within the basin. If fishermen want a relatively undisturbed Florida river in which they can drop their lines with good assurance of a nice catch, the St. Marys is a great choice.
